'Smoke Free Me'
The Adventures of Max and Mim
(Plus Tim!)
A Key Stage 2 Teaching Resource
Collingwood Learning and Wigan Council are launching our new teaching resources, the next installment in the Max and Mim series. 'Smoke Free Me' is a multi-media resource which teaches Key Stage 2 pupils the dangers of smoking and passive smoking, as well as the law applied to smoking. The resource will launch in Spetember 2011, and is being developed now.
Aim:
To reduce the number of young people who take up smoking
Objective:
- To teach young people the health risks of smoking, for them and those around them.
- To explain how addiction works and to bust myths surrounding the reason why people start
- To help students understand and resist peer influence around smoking
- To explain the law and how we can reduce smoking for better public health
- The benefits of staying smoke free and having a healthy lifestyle
- Where to go for advice and support for yourself or others
Tied into the curriculum for PSHE and Citizenship at KS2, and written to Department for Education guidelines, the resources contain;
- 6 entertaining and thought provoking film clips introducing and completing each lesson using the characters of Max and Mim
- 6 lesson plans
- All associated student worksheets, professionally designed
- Alcohol information and guidance for teachers
This innovative project once again uses entertaining filmed clips at the start and end of each lesson. Max and Mim - with the help of the students - help Mim's older brother Tim to realise the damage he is doing to himself by smoking, and take him on a journey where he ultimately quits, and lives the benefits. This innovative approach not only empowers young people with the stark facts, but educates them on the health benefits of being smoke free, creating a positive smoke free culture in the class and school. Our goal is not to educate by fear, which as we all know has limited results. We want young people to be champions of the 'smoke free' life, influencing others to do the same.
