    Details

In March 2006 Lincolnshire was one of only six authorities in the Country to be selected as a Beacon Council for its excellent work in promoting road safety and reducing the number of collisions on the County's roads.

'Max Respect' was launched by Lincolnshire County Council's Transport Services Group in 2006. It is the Council's branded approach to dealing with any incidents that arise on home to school transport. It also involves a range of proactive initiatives to promote, encourage and reward well behaved travel on home to school transport with the aim of ensuring the home to school journey is a safe and pleasant experience for all.

Wishing to further consolidates it's good work and expand its strong relationship with schools, the Council looked to Collingwood Learning to produce a theatre and workshop programme which brought the learning to life for Year 7 students across Lincolnshire.

From initial discussions it was clear that the requirement was to create a sustainable initiative which tied in with all the Council's work. Our response was to develop a programme which reached 30 schools across the region directly reaching 7,500 young people at a crucial stage in learning about safer travel.

    Key Challenge

The project demanded a completely integrated approach, ensuring that the project was themed to link with the existing activities and awareness literature available to students. Collingwood created a play all about Max Respect, building on the character and themes from the overarching campaign, focusing on the concept of respect. Further to this teaching resources ensured schools could integrate the messages across the curriculum. We also worked very closely with the safer travel advisers to introduce their role as part of the performance and signpost them to students for further advice.

    Outcomes

A selection of comments from teachers:

Workshop drama is spot on - the kids actually asked if it was true you know they are naughty on bus. It addresses the very worrying thing that 'they don't think of consequences' and hopefully it has opened their eyes - I will be picking it up in my lesson following this on. Brilliant.

Excellent production, the pupils clearly really enjoyed it. It really recognises how children behave and their response to peers.

Excellent team, performance, management. Superb command of the room. Had everyone's attention almost all of the time. Best presentation I've seen.

Excellent presentation, explores the concept of 'respect' in a 'streetwise' medium! Builds the idea of values in student friendly language.

The presentation and workshop were fantastic, I think it really made the students consider the school journey and how they and others act. It is a really good experience for the students to take part in.

Effective vehicle to convey serious messages
